First Commerce Raises More Than $10,000 for Local Animal Shelters

First Commerce Credit Union raised more than $10,000 for animal welfare organizations across North Florida and South Georgia through its annual Liz Nix Fundraiser. The campaign put the credit union’s mission to Empower Generations and Transform Communities into action.

The fourth annual Liz Nix Fundraiser brought in a total of $10,493.37 for humane societies in Tallahassee, Thomasville, Nashville, Ga. and Valdosta by showcasing the organizations’ important work.

“When animals are lost, abandoned or neglected, these animal organizations step up and save lives. Their transformative work of combatting animal overpopulation also makes all of our communities healthier,” said First Commerce CEO Cecilia Homison.

First Commerce hosted five “Dogs for Dogs” cookout events, serving freshly grilled hotdog lunches with all proceeds benefiting the animal organizations.

Visitors at some locations also met animals available for adoption. Hearts to Homes Humane Society in Nashville brought cute cats and kittens to meet people stopping by the cookouts.

Leon County Humane Society brought adorable adoptable puppies to the Tallahassee Westside location’s cookout.

Leon County Humane Society Director Lisa Glunt commended the Liz Nix Fundraiser for “touching the lives of animals throughout North Florida and South Georgia, while honoring the memory” of Liz Nix.

“The Leon County Humane Society has been blessed to be a recipient of the Liz Nix fundraiser for 3 years,” Glunt said. “All staff members at First Commerce Credit Union have been absolutely delightful. You’ve got a real bunch of animal lovers on board.”

Thomasville Humane showcased adoptable dogs including Ducky – a precious, hearing-impaired pooch who is a wonderful ambassador for the organization.

“At Thomasville Humane, our mission is to Create Impact Every Day — for both people and animals — and we’re deeply grateful for community partners like First Commerce CU who help make that impact possible,” said Sydney Pfaff, Thomasville Humane’s engagement director.

The Liz Nix fundraiser was launched in Nashville in 2022, and has now raised more than $35,000 for animal welfare organizations since it began. The fundraiser continues the legacy of longtime animal advocate Liz Nix.

Rodney Nix, Liz’s son, serves on First Commerce’s Nashville Advisory Council.

“The Nix family is grateful that our mother’s legacy lives on through this initiative that has grown to make an impact and offer hope in the lives of so many animals and their adoptive families,” Rodney Nix said as the fundraiser was kicking off this year.

Funds distributed to animal organizations:

Leon County Humane Society: $2,626.54
Thomasville Humane Society: $1,796.93
The Humane Society of Valdosta/Lowndes County: $1,278.50
Hearts to Homes Humane Society (Nashville, Ga.): $4,791.40
