Stay Scam-Smart: How to Protect Yourself

Scammers are getting smarter—and bolder. Whether it’s a fake text, a suspicious email, or a phone call that feels just a little off, imposter scams are on the rise and targeting consumers across the country.

At FCCU, we’re committed to helping you stay informed and protected. Visit our Fraud & Security page for up-to-date alerts, tools, and tips to safeguard your accounts.

How to Protect Yourself

As prevalent as imposter scams are, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. By implementing proactive measures and knowing what to look out for, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to these fraudulent schemes.

1. Verify the Identity

If you receive a suspicious call, text, or email, don’t respond right away. Instead, contact the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website. For emails, check the sender’s domain and search online to confirm legitimacy. FCCU members can find trusted contact info and fraud reporting steps on our Fraud & Security page.

2. Don’t Share Personal Information

Never share sensitive information—like your Social Security number, account details, or passwords—unless you initiated the contact and are sure of the recipient’s identity.

3. Be Wary of Urgency

Scammers often use pressure tactics to rush you into action. If someone says you must act immediately or face consequences, pause and verify. Legitimate organizations won’t use fear to force decisions.

4. Use Secure Payment Methods

Only use traceable and secure payment methods when making purchases or donations. Avoid gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency for unknown parties—these are common tools used by scammers

5. Stay Informed

Keep up with the latest scam alerts from trusted sources like the FTC, FBI, or your financial institution. Awareness is your first line of defense.
