Spend Less at the Pump: Simple Tips to Save on Gas

Here in North Florida and South Georgia, gas prices are rising right along with the temperature as we move further into spring. While that can be frustrating, the good news is there are proven ways you can start cutting down on fuel costs today.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, these six simple driving habits can help you use fuel more efficiently and avoid wasting gas:

Avoid aggressive driving
Speeding, rapid acceleration, and hard braking all waste fuel, lowering gas mileage by as much as 40% in some cases.

Drive the speed limit
Fuel economy varies by vehicle, but it generally decreases at speeds above 50 mph.

Skip the roof cargo when possible
Hauling items on your vehicle’s roof can reduce fuel economy by up to 25%. If you use a cargo container, consider removing it when it’s not actively in use.

Ditch the excess weight
Removing unnecessary items from your vehicle can improve fuel economy by about 1% for every 100 pounds.

Don’t idle longer than necessary
Excessive idling can burn a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour.

Use cruise control
Maintaining a steady speed with cruise control can help conserve gas on longer drives.

Beyond driving habits, staying on top of regular vehicle maintenance can also keep more money in your wallet. Promptly addressing engine issues, keeping tires properly inflated, and using the motor oil recommended for your specific vehicle can improve fuel efficiency and help you avoid costly repairs down the road.

Another smart way to save on gas is to keep an eye out for the best prices in your area. Apps like GasBuddy and Waze can help you compare local gas prices and determine whether it’s worth going slightly out of your way for a better deal.

Even small differences can add up. Saving just a few cents per gallon each time you fill up can lead to meaningful savings over the course of a year and leave you with a little extra breathing room in your budget.
