5 Questions with TSO Maestro Yaniv Dinur
First Commerce Credit Union is turning 85 — and the celebration promises to be unforgettable. On November 7, the Adderley Amphitheater at Cascades Park will come alive with the sounds of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Yaniv Dinur, in a spectacular tribute to legendary film composer John Williams.
“A John Williams Cinematic Celebration” will feature iconic scores that span generations, creating a magical evening for families, film lovers, and music enthusiasts alike. From the stirring themes of Star Wars to the emotional resonance of E.T., this performance is set to be a highlight of the season. Tickets start at just $32 and can be purchased here.
Ahead of the event, Maestro Dinur shared his insights in a five-question interview about films, music and being a conductor.
What is your favorite movie?
I have some favorite moments from different movies: the first time you see the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, E.T. flying on the bike, chasing scenes in Indiana Jones, Yoda lifting the spaceship in Star Wars – they all correspond with amazing music by John Williams.
Is there a particular film that has your favorite score, or had an impact on you as a musician?
Superman. I have to admit I’ve never watched the movie. I just love the score, and John Williams’ incredible gift is his ability to capture the essence of every character in sound.
Is there an instrument you enjoy playing that perhaps people wouldn’t guess?
I took some lessons on the double bass, because I wanted to experience what it’s like to play a string instrument. It’s hard, but I enjoyed it. I think I’ll stick to the piano, though.
What is one aspect of being a conductor that might surprise fans of the orchestra?
As opposed to what might be a common perception, the conductor is a pretty powerless figure. It’s the musicians who make the sounds. So if they don’t trust the conductor and don’t want to follow him, the conductor has pretty much nothing to do about it.
You’re going to be conducting the orchestra at the beautiful Adderley Amphitheater at Cascades Park. What is it like to perform outside in the open air, versus indoors?
Performing live orchestral music at the Adderley and experiencing the sounds merging with the beautiful nature and architecture of Cascades Park is going to be a magical experience. Plus, it’s much breezier.
