How a Simple Pause Can Protect You From Phone Scams
National Consumer Protection Week (March 1–7) is a nationwide effort to help people guard their money and personal information. This year also includes Slam the Scam Day on March 5, which focuses on stopping imposter scams, one of the fastest‑growing types of fraud in the country.
We are posting content every day during Consumer Protection Week to help people in the communities we serve combat fraud and report it so that scammers can’t continue to take advantage of unsuspecting victims.
There are times when taking a pause, evaluating the situation in front of you, and taking measured action can help you avoid a negative outcome.
This principle can apply to something as low‑impact as avoiding impulse spending on items you don’t need. But sometimes, taking a pause can help you avoid something far more serious, including significant financial losses.
If you receive a call aimed at obtaining personal information—whether banking details, a secure access code, or other sensitive information—hang up, call the organization the caller claimed to be from, and verify the authenticity of the call.
“Before you take any action, before you provide any information—no matter who they claim to be or where they’re calling from—you should call and verify before providing any details,” said Allen Burkes, First Commerce Director of Risk Management.
Red flags that could indicate a call you’re receiving is a phishing attempt include someone who:
- Pressures you to act immediately
- Tells you to keep the conversation a secret
- Asks for personal information, passwords, or one‑time passcodes
- Says your money is at risk unless you move it
- Tells you to pay with cryptocurrency, gift cards, or transfer apps
- Pretends to be your credit union or bank and asks you to “verify your account”
