Credit 101 for Kids and Teens: Building Financial Foundations

Establishing the foundational “building blocks” of learning is essential in the classroom. Breaking down complex subjects into their simplest form helps students understand and retain important concepts. For kids and teens, financial education should be approached the same way.

Because credit plays a key role in financial wellness throughout adulthood, it’s important to introduce the topic in an age-appropriate way. Let’s start with two foundational concepts that can help begin the conversation.

One of the most important concepts in understanding credit is trust.

Ask young people this question: Would you lend your favorite device, bike, or hoodie to someone you don’t trust?

The same principle applies to lenders such as credit unions and banks. When evaluating a borrower, lenders consider something called creditworthiness.

By reviewing a person’s credit history, lenders determine whether they can trust that borrower to repay the money they borrow, also known as debt.

Another foundational concept is understanding why credit matters, especially as kids grow older.

Having good credit can help you rent an apartment, buy a home, qualify for loans, and secure better interest rates. In many ways, good credit can open doors to important financial opportunities.

The opposite is also true. Poor credit can make it more difficult to qualify for loans, increase borrowing costs, and limit your financial options.

Building a strong financial future starts with understanding the basics. When kids and teens understand the fundamentals of credit, they’re better prepared for the financial milestones ahead.
